■Research summary
Assessment of human internal skeletal muscle functions and tendon characteristics using imaging equipment such as MRI and ultra-sound

 Evaluation of skeletal muscle functions are conducted by measuring of skeletal muscle and tendon characteristics using non-aggressive imaging equipment, such as MRI and ultra-sound.

Measurement of the amount of skeletal muscles, tendinous tissue volume, tendon elasticity properties are taken from athletes conducting training on a specific sport to identify the factors that influence sports performance. Study is also made to find guidelines to evaluate the amount of skeletal muscles and tendon elasticity performance of the athletes by the use of simple methods, such as ultra-sound methods and impedance methods.

In addition, the relationship between performance and the difference in properties of the left and right lower limb muscles and tendons for each sports is also studied. Based on the hypothesis that the skeletal alignment around the hip joint and the lower limbs and the unbalance of the muscle form is the cause for running disorders, the characteristics of alignment and muscle form of athletes prone to disorder has been made clear for middle to long distance runners. Based on the results, in addition to preventing athlete disorders, measures to maximize their sports performance are being studied.

Separately, the non-aggressive measuring of heterotopic fat (intramuscular fat, cardiac fat, liver fat), which is drawing recent attention for metabolic syndrome, using MRI is being made to clarify the relationship between intramuscular fat, liver fat, total body fat, the obesity related factors in the blood and sports performance. In addition, focus is made on intramuscular fat, which is believed to be consumed first in aerobic exercise, to check the changes in the amount of intramuscular skeletal muscle fat close to the part where fat is to be reduced accompanying locally concentrated workout and study shall be made for localized fat hypermetabolism.
