■Research summary
Application of psychology for judicial system

My research interest covers a broad range of topics in law and psychology.
1) Analyzing the deliberation process of mixed jury trial as group decision making situation
Since May 2009, Japanese criminal justice system has changed to mixed jury system. Deliberation process in this system is consisting of three professional judges and six lay citizens. The deliberation members discusses about criminal case together, then decide the verdict and sentences.
Main focus on this theme is to develop the analysis way of one deliberative conversation process. Especially, my research already found the way to show the relationships between group members and the contents in deliberation through the text-mining method and some statistics way (See Dealhunty & Wakabayashi, 2012). Now, I'm trying to develop the analysis way to show the flow of conversation based on this method

2) History of law and psychology in Japan
Other theme of my study is to reconstruct the history of psychology as methodology. In Japan, Seiichi Terada(1884─1922) was the first psychologist who applied psychological knowledge to the field of law, working in collaboration with the law professor Eiich Makino(1878─1970). My research focused on an article of Terada which titled “How useful are testimonies?” in 1915 . In that article, he described a set of seven experiments concerned with the empirical relationship between eyewitness testimony and memory. This is probably the first experimental study of law and psychology carried out in Japan. Until my research (Wakaabyashi & Sato, 2012) found this experimental article, Terada was not well known in the Japanese law and psychology field. Current research are researching about Terada's criminal/ clinical psychology work to reveal the knowledge of the criminal's personality in Taisho era.

3) To deliver the useful data for the decision making in legal problems by experimental psychology technics.
The generalized results from experimental psychology's technics can be useful for legal problems.
