■Research summary
The impact of user entrepreneurs on the firm management and performance

The product users can be the sources of product innovation and provide amounts of ideas for the new product development. This thought was brought up by Eric von Hippel in MIT back to the 1970s. Since then, the evidence about the user’s new product development activity has been found in various industries and nations. The theory about the user innovation is born.
My research – the user entrepreneurs – is located in the user innovation theory. The user entrepreneurs describe the people who found the firms based on the products which they originally developed for their own use. In Japan, we can find a lot of user entrepreneurs from the fishing tackle makers. According to Shah and Tripsas, in America, 84% of juvenile product makers are founded by the user entrepreneurs. For instance, when a baby takes a bath, she probably will touch the faucet or the drain of the bath. If so, there is the risk that her little finger will be stuck in the faucet or the drain. to solve this problem, some parents will build a fence inside the bath to protect their baby. Then, if the parents, who also hold the same problem, see this product, they can be interested in it and even ask the user innovator to sell a copy to them. This could be the turning point for the user innovator to create a firm to sell their products.
Up to now, while many researchers like Shah and Tripsas have studies the user entrepreneurial process, the study about the impact of user entrepreneurs on the firm management and performance is still lacking. In particular, from the perspectives of social identity theory and resource-based theory, user entrepreneurs bring their firms with the unique leadership and knowledge. Therefore, this study will focus on two relationships: one is between the user entrepreneurs and the firm management structure, and another is between the user entrepreneurs and the firm performance.
