■Research summary
/Field Studies on the effect of sport activity on health promotion and on health care and risk management on athlete /Data analysis on the relationships between human environment and diseases

For sport activities and their effects on the environment and health promotion, I have conducted studies in field activities of two sports: cycling and mountain climbing. 1) For cycling, it is "Biwaichi" that means cycling around Lake Biwa, i.e. bikeology in Shiga Prefecture. This is a long-distance and moderate sport, in which you spend two days cycling on the course for 170km or longer around Lake Biwa. This event draws 50 or more entries from in and out of the prefecture. The ages are very broad: from the young slightly over 15 years old to the elderly. What would you feel if you finish Biwaichi? Initially, it would be a sense of achievement, followed by self-satisfaction and self-efficacy, and then confidence. This leads to active aging, and I obtained some of immunological grounds to extend healthy life expectancy and published them in my thesis.
2) Study of effects of mountain climbing on health promotion identified that a sport environment of mountain significantly impacts people. This makes risk management more important. Despite ageing, Yuichiro Miura made a great accomplishment of climbing a Himalayan mountain. It's no exaggeration to say that the success was attributable to not only the fact that the athlete himself built up a miraculous body by training, but also arrhythmia management and the cutting-edge medical science health management as preventive measures against altitude sickness such as cerebral edema. Presently as a field activity, I have published thesis with the joint researchers, partially paid by grant-in-aid for scientific research, on change of hemoglobin and breathing functions during mountain climbing.
Before I spent 13 years at College of Sport and Health Science, I worked at school of medicine and department of public health. Therefore, I want to study the roles of research as the bridge between the two areas. I want to conduct an in-depth consideration on the human environment and how to handle the future by reviewing existing materials from the past as well as having more experiences through evaluation study of effects and risks of sport activities, such as health promotion and diseases, and conduct of field studies.
