■Message from researcher
My research interest
My research interests include media and cultural studies, brand and, branding, advertising and marketing, new media, creative/cultural industries and media and cultural globalization. I am particularly interested in theorizing new forms of cultural production and objects in Japanese and East Asian context and from 'post Birmingham' media and cultural studies perspective. I have lectured and written widely on branding in these issues in both academic and business settings and is now finishing a manuscript on globalization of Japanese brands in East Asia (in English) and on critical brand theory (in Japanese). My interest and approach to research stems from and is informed by my experience of working in a global advertising agency, as an account planner, and subsequent involvement in a couple of Internet start-ups in New York and Tokyo as a corporate strategist. I have brought this experience and knowledge into my research and teaching in order to explore the connections and tensions between theories and practices.

I have a Master degree with a concentration on international media and communications from School of International Affairs, Columbia University, New York, and a PhD from the Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. I was an organizer of London Asia Pacific Cultural Studies, a London wide forum for graduate students and scholars working on media and cultural issues in Pacific Asia, while at Birkbeck College from 2008 to 2015. I have joined Ritsumeikan University College of International Relations in April 2016 in my home town of Kyoto.
