Study of Innovation of Meaning from Perspective of Structurational Theory

This study focuses on the Innovation of Meaning (IoM) and aims at developing the theory and practical application program for Japanese companies.
The structuration theory is used to build the theoretical foundation. The premise of duality of structure underlies the structuration theory, which replace the classic dualism between structure and agency. The extant studies on the discipline of design management have focused too much on the designer’s interpretation from the perspective of hermeneutics. However, even professional, experienced designers develop a design fixation through organisational and managerial factors if they fail to overcome the conflict in organisations. Thus, it is important to illuminate not dualism, but the duality of the structure as well as individual daily actions
Furthermore, this study is based on the theory of design thinking. This allow us to understand how designers think and reason in their design processes. The fact is that professional, experienced designers have the fundamental reasoning pattern using their own working principle which they acquire through entire professional careers. Moreover, the design thinking studies indicated that the identity is the core part of the educational process for designers to acquire the principles.
The structuration theory and the design thinking studies allow us to explore the relationship between acquiring working principle and structural factors. Collectively, this study address to understand the inside-out process in organizations, which is core concept of IoM, using this theoretical foundation.
