■Research summary
My research convers two areas: (1) psycholinguistic research on bilinguality (language acquisition, maintenance and attrition) of highly balanced bilingual children, and (2) SLA research on effective English teaching in Japan. For both, I’ve been integrating neuro-lingistic approaches by using such a brain-imaging device as functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Almost no answers to the questions to "「What brain structure does a bilingualist has compared with a Japanese monolingualist?", "Although there are a huge number of books concerning how to improve the English ability, is there any scientific research on how to try and remember the words and grammatical items you have learned?" have not been made clear so far in the applied linguistics field. As what he/she is researching directly contributes to this field, is it the perfect field for challenging persons? Let us research the acquisition method of the maintainable and sustainable second language through the research on the language loss. I have been mainly engaged in the pcycholinguistic experiments and the analysis of the data that have been collected for a long time so far but now I have adopted the method using infrared spectroscopic method (Brain Imaging) since 6 years ago.
Concerning sharing the knowledge acquired by the research on the second language acquisition and loss with foreign language education fields, I have been considering the effective learning methods to the specific learners by collecting the data on various education fields. Furthermore, I would like to advance this research to spread to the general areas. Concretely, I have been engaged in the research on shadowing and combination of subtitles and sounds of DVD movies to improve the listening ability, the use of subtitles and sight translation to improve the speed reading ability, the effect of the language training abroad, etc. Since I witnessed the high quality of the English teachers through the study tour to the colleges in the Shanghai district in China, I have been continuously engaged in the field research on the English education and teacher training in China.
