Research summary
Elucidation of the biosynthesis and breakdown mechanism of a bio-energy source, plant sugar chains Plant sugar chain such as cellulose is attracting attention as a renewable energy source. However, plant sugar chain has a robust structure and is difficult to process, and is yet to become an alternative energy to replace fossil energy source. This being the case, biosynthesis and breakdown mechanism of the complex and robust structured plant sugar chain needs to be accurately elucidated in order to establish an efficient energy conversion technology. The biosynthesis and breakdown of plant sugar chain is a life phenomenon conducted by several enzymes, however, many of these enzymes have not been identified. The coordination of multiple enzymes is also an interesting subject for research. With these in the background, research is being conducted at Ishimizu Lab. to find the enzyme involved in the biosynthesis and breakdown of plant sugar chain and to elucidate the coordination of these multiple enzymes.
