Research summary
Today, with the developments in medicine made through the affluence in society, life-style related diseases caused by nutrition factors, such as over-nutrition and bias in palatability or from environmental causes, like the lack of exercise from the development of transportation, are steadily increasing annually. About 5 to 6% of the global adult population has type II diabetes, one of the typical life-style related diseases which is becoming a serious global issue. The number of diabetics in Japan has already exceeded 20 million, including those with “possibility of diabetes cannot be denied”, and the shortening of healthy life expectancy from complications and the ever-increasing medical bills have placed medical economy in a grave situation. We are conducting studies on the “elucidation of onset mechanism and treatment” for type II diabetes. Insulin hyposecretion and insulin resistance are both features of diabetes, however especially for the Japanese, insulin hyposecretion is more commonly seen and research is being conducted with the aim of “detailed elucidation of insulin secretion mechanism in pancreatic beta cells and the identification of the location of abnormality of diabetes, and the search for useful substances for treatment”
