1.	Conceptual research on the ethical, legal, and social implications of the life sciences and medical technologies

Research summary
Trying to determine the roles and significance of philosophy (philosopher) and ethics (ethicist) through consideration of the various ethical problems faced by the post-modern society ・Conceptual study of ethical, legal or social effects as life science is studied 　Life science, synonymous with brain science and regenerative medicine, and its applied technology are the areas on which society places big expectations, because they enable development of new treatment methods against the diseases to which treatment have been traditionally considered impossible. For advancing science adapted to society, however, research participants (examinees) who cooperate in those science researches must be properly protected above all. 　Then, this study sorts out issues on ethical, legal or social problems as life science, mainly brain science, is studied, and it conducts consideration of the theoretical and conceptual problems that will be required to solve the above problems. So far, I have sorted out issues on the problem of addressing 'incidental findings' that appear in brain image researches, have determined choices of ethically desirable measures at this stage, and have clarified what theory study or experienced survey would be further required in order to build better measures on the problems. Now, in particular, concerning the 'ancillary-care' problems discussed in recent years in medical study conducted in the developing countries, I advance consideration from the theoretical perspective with an eye toward the possibility of connecting to international justice theory. 　In order to advance science adapted to society, it is essential to consider not only the problem concerning examinee protection but also ethical, legal or social issues (ELSI) hidden in the advanced science and its applied technology. From this point of view, this study also considers social effects of the advanced life science and its applied technology. In particular, so far, I have considered the matter called 'enhancement' according to, in particular, the matter of 'doping' from the perspective of 'sport ethics.' 'Enhancement' means what was initially developed for treatment of diseases and uses new gene engineering, brain science and technology and others to enhance the capability of the able-bodied. As a result, it has been clarified that while justification of doping prohibition rule can be effectively discussed from the perspective of consistency with the essence of sports, the essence of sports is always open to various interpretations, not making it definitive ground for prohibition. Now, by reconsidering the matter of enhancement in a bigger context than sports scenes, I consider how philosophy, ethics and other humanistic thinking can make a contribution to assessment of general social effects made by evolution of science and technology.
