Research summary
Establishing a scientific basis for the development of exercise prescriptions for preventing lifestyle-related diseases and long-term care: Effects of physical activity and strength on sarcopenic obesity and frailty. Sarcopenic obesity is a clinical and physiopathological entity that has been associated with greater disability and morbidity and mortality. Sarcopenic obesity is a problem of body composition, and it is desirable to develop an exercise prescription that corresponds to the characteristics of body composition. In addition, frailty is a stage before the need for long-term care, and is prone to multifaceted problems such as mental and psychological frailty as well as physical frailty, and is a high-risk state that is prone to health disorders including disability and death. There are not enough reports that comprehensively examine physical activity and physical strength and these frailties. 【Research theme (1) Overview】Effects of physical activity and strength on sarcopenic obesity Recently, our laboratory has published several reports related to the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity. This study examines the effects of physical activity and strength on sarcopenic obesity and examines what types of exercise are effective for each classification of body composition. ＜Research status and results＞ In addition to presenting recommended diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity in Japanese people (Geriatrics & Gerontology International, 2024), we report on the relationship between sarcopenia and obesity evaluation-related factors (Journal of Physiological Anthropology, 2024). 【Research theme (2) Overview】 Few studies have investigated the relationship between physical activity, frailty, and purpose in life in the elderly using objective indicators, and many points remain unclear. This study aims to examine the effects of physical activity and physical strength on frailty, purpose in life, and QOL, and to develop an exercise prescription to prevent frailty and increase purpose in life in the elderly. ＜Research status and results＞ We surveyed physical activity, physical strength, purpose in life, and the presence or absence of frailty in Japanese elderly people living in the community and reported on the relationship between the accumulation of frailty and purpose in life (Healthcare, 2022) and the relationship between frailty and physical activity (J Phys Ther Sci, 2023).
