Research summary
My academic specialization lies in urban housing policies. Housing accommodates households in the urban space. The geographical distributions of housing and households are determined by the dynamic spatial matching of households selecting the accommodation of their needs from different housing types available in urban space. The housing/residential choices of low-income/ minority households are economically and socially restricted. Thus, they likely face housing problems, such as the lack of appropriate facilities and overcrowding, or live in areas with limited job and service opportunities. I have taken on theoretical and empirical research approaches for the urban housing problem in the Kansai area in Japan and cities in the U.S., Indonesia, and China. My research explores questions such as how and where low-income households live in the city, what factors affect their housing/locational decisions, how their residential choice decisions contribute to their socio-economic outcomes, and what policy agenda lies in providing them with appropriate housing support. As for the research method, I have employed the Geographic Information System (GIS) for spatial analysis. My recent research, collaborating with other researchers, analyzed the locations of public housing complexes selected by child-rearing households in Kyoto City based on application data. I empirically elucidated the tendency of single-parent households to apply for public housing near their residence. Regarding urban areas in countries other than Japan, I have been researching the progress of the rent subsidy policy in Los Angeles and the developments in public housing reduction and urban renewal in Chicago. Regarding future research, I am interested in investigating community building in public housing/improved housing neighborhoods, accommodating low-income households in private rental housing, and providing housing search support. In terms of education, I have supervised Japanese- and English-based undergraduate students and graduate students from various countries, including Japan, Indonesia, China, and Vietnam. Sometimes, we go on field trips to the areas in neighboring cities in Kansai to learn about their actual situations.
