Research summary
“Study of cultural and social history in modern China” and “Study of reciprocal action between people and environment in the arid and semi-arid regions in north west inlands of China” The subject of my research can be broken down into two major parts. The first is to clarify the characteristics of the age of modern China, especially the end of Ming/beginning of Qing period around the 16th to 17th century, from cultural and social aspects. I am in search of various phases of daily life of the cultured people during the end of Ming/beginning of Qing period. One of the major theme of my study is to clarify the collection and appreciation of curios and objects of art that was greatly popular in various cities in the Jiangnan region that was the forefront of economy and culture at the time, and their actual trading practices. The end of Ming/beginning of Qing period was a large period of transition in the modern history of China. Many cultural products formed in this age has been passed to the present, ranging from the structure of politics, society, and economy, to the patterns of behavior and thinking of people, and forms a solid norm of the foundation of culture. The image of classic China held by general public of Japan is actually under a strong influence of this age. To correctly understand the culture of this age has a profound meaning to further understand China of today. The other is to clarify the historic process of the environmental issue of current China which is drawing a lot of attention, especially the desertification of inland areas and the shortage of water. I have been involved in the survey study of the Heihe basin in the north west part of China. The Heihe is the second largest inland river in China with its source in the Qilian mountains in Qinghai Province, flowing through the Zhangye and Jiuquan oases of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province and forms a terminal lake in Ejin oasis in Inner Mongolia. From the past to the present, the Heihe river basin, being the “crossroads of culture” has been traveled and settled by diverse forms of living (farming, nomadic), religion (Tibetan Buddhism, Islam), and race (Hans, Tibetans, Mongols) and the people have co-existed under repeated mutual confrontation and fusion. This is a region where the problems and contradiction of the Chinese society appear the most directly. With cooperation of researchers in other fields (cultural anthropology, melted snow water studies, hydrology, geology, etc.) involved in the cooperative study, reading of literature, and site surveys, my study is conducted from the standpoint of historical science, on the relationship between the people and nature in the Heihe basin with the central theme on the development and use of water resources.
