3.	Visual semiotic theory, developed in the social semiotics tradition, does not adequately deal with many aspects of meaning-making in time-based visuals, thus more work is needed to extend the ideas behind visual semiotic thinking and to test these ideas against a range of texts/data.

Research summary
Early radio in Japan =============== My research over the past few years has shifted as I have become interested in 'rajio-tō' (ラジオ塔) 'radio towers'. During the 1930s NHK, in partnership with local administrators around Japan, put in place a system of public radios to encourage radio listening. 'Radio towers' were built in parks and other public places to allow a broader public to access NHK programming. The sounds of radio broadcasting, later a channel for the voice of government, were injected into public spaces across Japan's town and cities. How did this process happen? What did local people think? Did anybody actually use them? We know next to nothing about the use and reception of 'radio towers' or how the system was established and funded. My research aims to recover this lost (ignored?) history and add to our understanding of the beginnings of broadcast mass media in Japan. Visual Semiotics of Television News =========================== My research is aimed at improving the theoretical basis of visual semiotic analyses of time-based visual media, particularly television. My major source of data is the images of television news programs in Japan and the UK though I also attempt to take into account the importance of regimes of production and the 'real-world' nature of producing television news. Thus my research has also extended to working with camera operators and video editors in order to investigate their conceptions of their work and to try to elucidate the unwritten rules which underpin the 'craft' of news camerawork.
