Research summary
Listening Strategies in EFL for Japanese Intermediate Listeners 1. Description of my current research interests My current research interests are ‘Diagnostic teaching methods in EFL listening based on theories and evidence’. In Japan, students are generally left to work out for themselves where and why their understanding breaks down and how to overcome their problems by being given many handouts such as a Japanese translation, an audio script and a word list. However, I found that it is possible for teachers to pinpoint precisely where and why learners’ understanding breaks down and how to overcome their problems based on the theories of Cognitive Psychology Theory (Anderson, 2010) and Controlled and Automatic Human Information Processing Theory (Shiffrin and Schneider, 1977). With my 18-months empirical research data from 259 participants, I have completed my Ph.D. thesis about diagnostic and effective teaching methods in EFL listening. Based on my Ph.D. thesis, published in 2015 with research fund, a five-year research fund has been awarded by the Japanese government since 2017: Japan Society from the Promotion of Science, KAKENHI, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant Number JP17K03037, ¥ 2.21 million (≒ €17839). 2. Research plans for the immediate future Thus, I have my own and a concrete research plan during my stay as a visiting professor at The University of Vienna. The followings are the concrete plans. 1. To collect information about the contents of university curricula for those who would like to become teachers of English from 10 different universities in Japan. 2. To write a research paper about the current curricula of universities in Japan from the viewpoint of EFL listening instructions. 3. ●Practical Example of Education Technique

1.	2011/04	Most 1st-year university students in Japan try to read every single word when reading something in English. In my class, reading strategies such as skimming and scanning are introduced.
2.	1997/10	By proving information such as my e-mail address, office telephone number, extension number, building, floor, office room number, office hour, etc., students have a very easy access to me.
3.	1997/10	A test score of individual student is shown with an Over Head Camera. Students are asked to write only the last four digits of their ID No., their personal information is protected.
4.	1997/10	Using the Mailing List of each class, information regarding the next lesson such as a teaching plan, what to bring, assignment, test etc., is provided weekly after each class.

●Presentation about Teaching

1.	2012/10	The most appropriate llearning methods in EFL listening is provided in my class depends on a learner's level. These methods were gained through some experimental studies when I was reading my PhD.
