Details While the considerable potential of woody resource availability exists in the farming and mountainous areas of Japan, most of these areas are currently unsuccessful at making use of the potential and are even becoming depopulated. One such area is Shimokawa Town in Hokkaido Prefecture, which has earned attention as a remarkable case of regional vitalization through implementing local forest management and woody-biomass energy use. This paper outlines the current forestry situation using information obtained from the authors’ field survey in October 2019. It summarizes the contributions of forest products and biomass industries to this town’s achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
