概要 This chapter deals with the explicit characteristics of Cambodian populism and focuses
on the decline of multi-party democracy through an analysis of various electoral statistics.
In many respects, Cambodia populism is unique and characterized by the long serving
Prime Minister “strong man” Hun Sen3
and his family. During the post-cold war period,
western nations did not provide aid yet in the early 1990s, the establishment of democratic
institutions were seen to be essential and tied to its disbursement (UN, 2005). As such,
populism in Cambodia has revolved around its election schedules in order to receive
western foreign aid and in part, this has been due to rapid economic growth in the country
supported by FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) and ODA (Official Development
Assistance).
