タイトル My research interest
メッセージ My research interests include media and cultural studies, advertising and branding, new media, creative/cultural industries, and cultural globalization. I am particularly interested in analyzing new forms of cultural production and objects in the Japanese and East Asian context and from 'post-Birmingham' media and cultural studies perspective. I have lectured and written widely on these issues in academic and business settings and is now finishing a manuscript on the globalization of Japanese brands in East Asia (in English) and critical brand theory (in Japanese). My interest and approach to research stems from and is informed by my experience of working in a global advertising agency as an account planner and subsequent involvement in a couple of Internet start-ups in New York and Tokyo as a corporate strategist. I have brought this experience and knowledge into my research and teaching in order to explore the connections and tensions between theories and practices. I have a Master's degree with a concentration on international media and communications from the School of International Affairs, Columbia University, New York, and a Ph.D. from the Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. I taught in the Department for Film, Media and Cultural Studies at Birkbeck College - University of London - from 2008 to 2015. I joined Ritsumeikan University College of International Relations in April 2016 in my home town of Kyoto.
